WhatsApp backups no longer count towards Google Drive storage

According to a statement on the WhatsApp website, "starting November 12, 2018, WhatsApp backups will no longer count towards the Google Drive storage quota".

Google Drive is a cloud storage platform that lets you save files or backup data on your devices (including PCs, phones and removable storage).

Users have been able to backup their WhatsApp chat to Google Drive for a while now. This feature enabled users to be able to transfer their chats to a new phone. However, this backup took up part of the 15GB free space provided to each user by Google. For some active WhatsApp users, it even fill up their entire Google Drive storage.

Starting November 12, WhatsApp backups will no longer take up space on Google Drive.
